As teachers, many of us face the challenge of not only remembering, but deeply understanding, the grammatical terms necessary for effective instruction surrounding language structures. This has certainly been an area that I have personally grappled with throughout my years of teaching! But the reality is, if we are feeling confused, our students will be too!
It is crucial for us, as teachers, to understand key terminology so that our grammar instruction is impactful, targeted and effective. Having a solid understanding of language structures helps us more easily identify specific areas within our students’ writing that require further support and plan our instruction accordingly. In this way, we empower our students by guiding them toward mastering the art of effective written communication.
